Lawson State had 17 assists on 20 made field goals, but it was a single free throw from
Ananda Hughley's with six seconds left was the difference in a 61-60 Friday night over Wallace-Selma at the Arthur Shores Fine Arts Building.

The game was close between the teams, with neither leading by more than five points in the second half. The Lady Patriots led 41-40 entering the fourth quarter but
Sanaiya Morris sandwiched 3-pointers around a Hughley 3-ball to give the Lady Cougars a 51-47 advantage midway through the final period.

When
Dericka Davis scored off a feed from
Alijah Fountain with two minutes left, Lawson State led 58-53. But Wallace-Selma fought back and tied the game on a layup by Jahmyah Pettway with 27 seconds remaining. She was fouled on the shot but missed the ensuing free throw, giving the Lady Cougars a chance to win it.

Hughley took a pass from Fountain but was fouled on her shot attempt. She made the first free throw but missed the second, with the Lady Patriots grabbing the rebound. After a time out, Aja Wiltshire's long 3-pointer slammed into the backboard and the Lady Cougars escaped with the win.

Morris scored 14 points, Davis added 13 and Hughley put up 12 for Lawson State, which plays again on Tuesday at Chattanooga State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.Â
